9 Questions to Ask a Cabinet Maker Before You Request a Quote

9 Questions to Ask a Cabinet Maker Before You Request a Quote

Hiring a custom cabinet maker is a significant investment in your home. Before you commit to a quote, you need to know exactly what you are paying for, how it's built, and who is doing the work. To ensure you are partnering with the right professional, ask these 9 essential questions during your initial consultation.

A reliable cabinet maker will gladly answer questions about their materials and process.

    1. Do you build the cabinets locally, or order them?

Some companies sell "custom" cabinets that are actually ordered from a large factory out of state, making them more of a dealer than a builder. We build all our cabinetry locally in Aransas Pass, giving us complete control over quality, timing, and immediate adjustments if needed.

    2. What materials do you use for the cabinet boxes?

Ask if they use furniture-grade plywood or particleboard/MDF. We strongly recommend plywood for its durability, screw-holding power, and moisture resistance—which is critical in coastal environments like Rockport and North Padre Island.

    3. Who handles the installation?

Does the cabinet maker install their own work, or do they sub it out to independent contractors? We handle our own installations to guarantee the precision and fit of the final product. A cabinet is only as good as its installation.

    4. How do you handle measurements and site visits?

We conduct our own site visits to take precise measurements, ensuring the cabinetry is planned around the actual conditions of your room. Relying solely on builder blueprints without a field verification can lead to costly mistakes.

    5. What kind of hardware do you use?

The hinges and drawer glides are the moving parts you interact with every day. Ask if they use premium, soft-close, full-extension hardware (like Blum or Salice). Cheap hardware will sag and break over time. We only use high-end, durable hardware meant to last decades.

    6. What is your finishing process?

A beautiful cabinet needs a durable finish. Ask if they use a conversion varnish, catalyzed lacquer, or standard paint. We use professional-grade, multi-step finishes that resist moisture, chipping, and yellowing.

    7. How do you handle changes to the design?

Changes happen. Ask how revisions are handled before production begins, and what happens if a change is requested during the build. We communicate clearly about what stages allow for revisions and how that impacts the final quote.

    8. Can you coordinate with my builder or designer?

If you are building a new home or doing a major remodel, your cabinet maker needs to be a team player. We regularly work with local builders and designers to ensure schedules align and technical specs (like plumbing and appliance clearances) are accurate.

    9. What is included in the final quote?

Ensure the quote includes everything: design, materials, hardware, finishing, delivery, and installation. You don't want to be surprised by an "installation fee" at the end. Our quotes are comprehensive and transparent.

What This Means For Your Project

A trustworthy cabinet maker will be transparent about their materials, process, and capabilities. We welcome these questions during our consultations because an informed client makes the best decisions for their home. If a contractor is hesitant to answer these, it may be a red flag.
